Sherlock Holmes needs no introduction. This fictional detective first created by Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This fictional detective got so much fame that novels, books, films and even TV series have been produced using the same character and the feel. But as these movies and TV series are produced by different people, the cast is different too. Yes, we are looking for a smart and amazing comparison between two ‘Sherlocks’. Robert Downey and Benedict Cumberbatch both are playing Sherlock Holmes.
‘Sherlock’ is a British television crime drama that is based on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective stories and stars Benedict Cumberbatch. The TV series first aired in 2010 and then after that in 2012 and 2014. The TV series is a huge success and has been appraised all over the world. Nearly 10 million viewers watched the series and they became one of the most watched TV series. Award nominations also came along the way. The over hyped show ended with three episodes in January 2014 but the fever did not end as the Sherlock doesn’t end with TV series and people still haven’t forgotten the Sherlock Holmes movies that came before the series starring Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock and Judith Law as Watson.
Robert Downey Jr. has evolved into one of the most respected actors in Hollywood. With an amazing list of credits to his name, he has managed to stay new and fresh even after over four decades in the business. Downey displayed his versatility in different films and Iron man, Sherlock homes, Due Date, Avengers Assemble are the perfect proof of his versatility. The persona of Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock is nothing less than a spell casted on the audience of his charm. The actor is playing the character of Pipe-smoking detective who is living, working and solving mysteries in the Victorian era. This is just like the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created the character in 1887. Robert Downey Jr. has given the movies the most needed charm and the movies were huge hits. The first movie was released in 2009 and the sequel to it was released in 2011. With the success of two movies, the 3rd sequel is under development stage.
Fans of Sherlock Holmes are enjoying the era of popularity to its extreme. The two actors playing Sherlock are amazing and personified in their own unique ways. The quality of performances of both hunks is excellent as there is no doubt about their acting skills and the justice they are doing to the role. However if we look at the original book character and compare it with TV series and movie character, in my opinion Robert Downey Jr. is closer the original character in the books.
Benedict Cumberbatch puts great emphasis on the arrogance and inability to connect with people but actually the original character has the skills that can easily charm people. He is more in control of himself which goes with the TV series. Overall the character in TV series is more prone towards immaturity and is very rude unlike the original character who never does a thing without perfect clues and he has sensible fashion sense. Original character is physically stronger than the TV series’ character. Overall Benedict Cumberbatch’s character is written in a particular way that it adds and subtracts characteristics of the original Sherlock and portrays a modern day Sherlock and does justice to the character with style and substance. The ups and downs of the TV series’ character is written in that way. So the closeness of Benedict Cumberbatch to the original character depends on how it is written by the writers.
One the other hand Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock is closer to the original character as the movies portrayed the Sherlock as a tough guy both mentally and physically. He is a fun character with lighter modes as shown in the books. Overall the character played by Robert Downey is justified as the character fits his role. The previously renowned actor had the abilities to squeeze in the role. Robert Downey Jr. whether in Sherlock or Iron Man, remains himself. Although audiences love the movies and Robert Downey Jr. possess the fan base that is not easy to gain and manage.
If anyone has to choose between who plays the better Sherlock the decision must have solid and valid reason to choose one over another. I personally don’t have solid reasons to do that. And I think there is no reason to choose one. Everyone have their own personal preferences and I thinks I enjoy and love to have both of the great actors as Sherlock.
