Director Rob Schrab, who on the TV side has helmed Community, Parks And Recreation and The Mindy Project, will make his feature directorial debut on Warner Bros’ The LEGO Movie Sequel. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who directed the first pic, are writing and will produce the sequel together with Dan Lin and Roy Lee. That’s a big job for a first-timer for a big sequel like this: the original had made almost $470M since its February 2014 release and a franchise already is the works with upcoming Ninjago slated for a September 23, 2016 release and an untitled Batman Lego feature due out in May 2017. The original broke February records when it debuted with $69M domestically.

It was widely thought of as the biggest omission of the Oscars this year when it was left out of the Best Animated Feature race in the nominations. Disney’s Big Hero 6 won the Oscar in the category on Sunday.

Said Lord and Miller today: “We are so excited to collaborate with Rob. He is a comedy genius, a visual savant, and we have been stalking him for years. No one works harder than Rob, and his aesthetic, combined with his sense of humor, bring a strong, unique, thoughtful, and passionately nerdy voice to this project. People who know him are slapping their foreheads today and saying, ‘Of course!’ ”

Schrab’s comedy cred includes writing, directing and exec producing Comedy Central’s The Sarah Silverman Program, earning him a WGA Award nomination. He also has a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for writing on the 81st Oscars that was hosted by Hugh Jackman.
